Carpathian Convention Working Group on Adaptation to Climate Change

Meeting 12-13 March 2014 Vienna, Austria

The third meeting of the Working Group on Adaptation to Climate Change takes place 12-13 March 2014 Vienna, Austria. The Working Group aims to support the Parties to the Carpathian Convention by providing advice on adaptation to climate change in the Carpathian region. The Working Group will debate the available information on vulnerability to climate change impacts in the Carpathian Region, and provide guidance and recommendations for the development of policy and project proposals.

Meeting 6-7 February 2012 Brussels, Belgium

This 6-7 February, the new Working Group on Adaptation to Climate Change under the Carpathian Convention had its first meeting in Brussels, Belgium. Over 25 representatives from the Carpathian Region were joined by officials from the European Commission, the European Parliament, UNEP, ICPDR (International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River) and the research projects CARPIVIA and CarpathCC to debate climate change impact, vulnerability and adaptation in the region. The meeting participants agreed that the working group would aim to deliver: i) a Climate Change Adaptation Strategic Agenda to be adopted at the Fourth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Carpathian Convention (COP 4) in 2014, ii) a set of well- documented adaptation options, iii) a Strategy for dissemination of information on adaptation to climate change to different stakeholders. As a first outcome of the working group, a web based information system on climate change impacts and adaptation will be launched at the Forum Carpathicum in a session co-hosted by the Carpathian Convention, the CARPIVIA and CarpathCC project.

Background: The Third Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP3) to the Carpathian Convention (Bratislava, Slovakia, 2011) approved the Terms of Reference for the Working Group on Adaptation to Climate Change by its Decision COP3/15. This Working Group aims to support the Parties to the Carpathian Convention by providing advice on adaptation to climate change in the Carpathian region. The Working Group will debate the available information on vulnerability to climate change impacts in the Carpathian Region, and provide guidance and recommendations for the development of policy proposals in line with the objectives of the Carpathian Convention and the European Commission’s White Paper on Adapting to Climate Change. CARPIVIA will support the working group.
